Extracts from SPS Committee meeting summary reports

Australia indicated that Japan's notification regarding its proposed draft law on the conservation and sustainable use of living modified organisms raised a number of concerns. Australia was a major grain exporter and was especially interested in the documents which should accompany shipments. Japan had not responded to Australia's query. The United States was also concerned how Japan intended to implement the Cartagena Biosafety Protocol and in particular the documentation requirements.
Japan replied that it had ratified the Cartagena Biosafety Protocol on 10 June 2003 and its measures were consistent with the agreement. Japan would shortly provide responses to the questions it had received from Australia.
