Imidacloprid is an insecticide with systemic properties used in the control of Colorado potato beetles, flea beetles, aphids and other insect pests. A request for registration of imidacloprid for use on potatoes has been received. The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) of Health Canada has been requested to establish a Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) to cover resultant residues of imidacloprid, including its metabolitites, in this crop. To ensure public health and safety, Health Canada establishes MRLs for agricultural chemicals based on scientifically developed acceptable daily intakes (ADIs). The safety assessment of pesticide residues in food is based on the critical review of all scientific data available, calculating the theoretical daily intake of a residue and comparing this to the ADI as determined by extensive test results and the application of an appropriate safety factor. After the review of all available data, it is proposed to amend the Food and Drug Regulations to establish an MRL for imidacloprid in potatoes at 0.3 ppm.
